Kentiopsis oliviformis

At 30m/100' tall, this is the tallest palm tree in New Caledonia a group of islands in the South Pacific off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It has a grey, ringed trunk and elegant, light green, feather shaped leaves. The emergent leaves often display some colour, although the colour seems to vary with the environment. Plants grown in sun often display blues, whereas shade grown plants may display pinks and bronzes. The crownshaft is fairly deep green, often with a white waxey coating It grows in forests on the largest Island of New Caledonia and copes with reasonable humidity. Due to it's eventual height, it will take full sun as it gets older, but requires moist, well draining soil. It will grow in most tropical and subtropical areas and even some warm temperate areas and it has shown some surprising cold tolerance in cultivation. It is actually proving to be a very adaptable palm.
