Bactris major
Bactris major

Common Name: Lata Palm

This is a very attractive, smaller palm from the rainforests of Central and South America. The slender, clustering stems grow to about 4m/13' in height and are dark brown to almost black in appearance. Leaves are lush green, finely pinnate and slightly recurved, giving a somewhat tropical appearance. These palm trees are armed with spines on the petioles and leaf nodes, as such does not respresent a good palm for public areas. Whilst not common in cultivation, it makes an attractive addition to any tropical or subtropical garden, enjoying plenty of heat and moisture. Bactris major will take full sun when larger, but prefers a sheltered position to look at it's best. Plant below a canopy to avoid wind exposure and allow optimal moisture levels. These palms can be adapted to pot culture and will make a good conservatory palm or houseplant, if sufficient light and moisture can be provided. Regular misting will be necessary in all, but the most humid of indoor settings.
