Pinanga coronata

Common Name: Ivory Cane Palm

One of the many Pinanga species from Indonesia. A very variable, rainforest species, sometimes sold as Pinanga kuhli. This is a clump forming, medium sized species to about 8m/26' tall, although often only 3.6m/12'. The trunks are quite slender at 50mm/2" diameter and an attractive light green, topped by a cream coloured crownshaft. The pinnate (feather) leaves are quite variable with some plants having considerably wider leaflets than others. Unlike many Pinanga species, coronata does show some degree of cold tolerance, even surviving light freezes. There are quite a few growing in Southern California, which would not be possible with most Pinangas. Being a rainforest species, it likes high humidity and will grow well with plenty of moisture and warmth in a shady location. This species is now relatively common in cultivation, due to it's good looks and ease in warmer climates. It is not adverse to pot culture and is worth a try in cooler climates, either as a greenhouse palm or a summer only outside palm. It could also be well suited as a houseplant or for interior landscaping projects where the humidity or moisture levels can be kept up sufficiently. Being a clumping species, the larger stems can be removed, if the plant outgrows the available space, so it could theoretically provide many years of enjoyment inside the house.
