Pelagodoxa henryana

Critically endangered in it's natural habitat on the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, Pelagodoxa henryana, the only species in the genus, is an unusual looking palm. It holds a dense crown of large, entire leaves, each up to 2m/7' in length. The light green leaves have a rather pale underside, short petioles and are somewhat prone to wind damage. Unlike many entire leaved palms, Pelagodoxa henryana grows into quite a tall tree with a trunk up to 10m/32' tall. Despite it's eventual height, this species spends most of it's life as an understorey palm in humid, valley forests. In cultivation, which may be it's only chance of long term survival, this palm does well in a well protected tropical or sub-tropical climate, in a lightly shaded position. It requires high humidity and constant moisture in a free draining soil to look it's best.
