Dypsis cabadae
Dypsis cabadae

Common Name: Cabadae Palm

Unlike most of the Dypsis genus, this palm does not originate from the Madagascar mainland, but from the nearby Comores Islands, where it grows in open forests. This feather palm forms a fairly dense clump, growing to 8m/26' in height. It is fairly similar in appearance to Dypsis lutescens (Golden Cane Palm), but has a green trunk and a pale crownshaft. Whilst similar in it's requirements to Dypsis lutescens, requiring a tropical or subtropical climate and full sun to light shade, it is somewhat slower growing, though still becoming very popular in cultivation. Although it is not very cold tolerant, it can easily be grown in colder areas in a suitably sized pot, either in a greenhouse or atrium, anywhere with sufficient light available. Due to it's clumping habit, larger stems can be removed if it outgrows the available space inside. Alternatively, grow it outside in the warmer months and remove the larger stems for overwintering inside.
