Vriesea splendens is another member of the Bromeliad family. This species has become quite popular in cultivation due to it's striking banded foliage and bright red flower spike. It is a very variable species, changing it's growing habit based on conditions. It can be grown in anything from deep shade to bright indirect light, but grows much larger in more shady situations with some plants reaching over 50cm (20") across. Although it is not frost tolerant, it is a great houseplant and given sufficient light will remain relatively small 20cm (8") across, making it small enough for any room. Alternatively in a tropical garden, it will make stunning ground cover. Like many bromeliads it collects water in the "cup" created by the leaf formation, so the soil can be kept on the dry side, but always ensure there is a little water in the cup. Although this plant dies after producing it's flower spike, it will produce one or sometimes more "pups", which will originate next to the flower spike.
