Lytocaryum weddellianum

Common name: Miniature coconut palm.

Another small palm from Brazil rarely exceeding 2m (7') in height. It has a dense crown of very graceful, finely pinnate leaves held atop a slim single stem and adapts well to pot culture. Formerly Microcoelum weddellianum this palm gets it's common name from it's fruit which resemble tiny coconuts. In habitat it grows in the understorey of rainforest and as such will tolerate low light levels. All of these features have made it very popular in cultivation and it makes an excellent houseplant. It is also quite tough and can handle mild frost, so it is a possibility for a protected area of some cool temperate gardens. If left in the pot, it can easily be brought inside on the coldest nights.
