Heterospathe negrosensis

From rainforests in The Philippines, this small, solitary palm, which often only reaches 3m/10' in height, has a fairly slim, smooth, grey trunk. Some rings from old leaf bases are usually visible towards the top of the trunk, but they fade with age. Probably the most attractive part of this palm are it's finely pinnate fronds, which have long, thin, bright green, leaflets, which are held in a drooping arrangement, much like Euterpe edulis or Clinostigma samoense. It can also develop quite colourful, red and purple adventitious roots in a suitably humid environment. Despite it's small size Heterospathe negrosensis will take a lot of sun, if the moisture levels are kept up, but it will also adapt to lightly shaded areas. It is thought to be fairly tropical in it's requirements. Whilst it hasn't been tested extensively outside of the tropics and sub-tropical regions, there is little to suggest that it would exhibit any cold tolerance, given it's habitat and heritage. It's size, however, does offer the option of keeping it as a potted specimen or in an otherwise protectable situation in cooler climates. Seeds and even small plants are occasionally available and it will certainly brighten up any conservatory or well lit indoor area with sufficient humidity.
