Calyptrocalyx flabellatus is a rare clumping species from Papua New Guinea. It forms entire, undivided leaves up to 2.5m/8' long. Emergent leaves are often bright red, making a very ornamental plant. Although thought to be very tropical in it's requirements, this palm stays reasonably small and being an understorey species doesn't require too much light, so it can be adapted to pot culture for indoor use in cooler climates. It will prefer higher levels of humidity than normally found in the home, but this can be helped with regular misting or placing the pot on a tray of wet gravel. The medium should be fast draining, but kept moist.
