Common name: Mountain Date Palm
One of the smaller varieties of date palm, this species is found in open forest areas of Taiwan. It is a suckering species to about 4m (13') tall and has a few distinct varieties, which as yet have not been formally named, so there can be a degree of confusion with different names being used. It is less cold hardy than Phoenix canariensis, but should still survive a few degrees of frost. It will survive unprotected in a suitable microclimate in some cool temperate areas, but some winter protection would be advised for most cool temperate gardens. Will take full sun from an early age.
