Phoenix roebelenii

Common Name: Pygmy Date Palm

Originating from the rain forests of Vietnam and Thailand, this palm is reputed to only grow to 3m (10') in height, but older specimens can be somewhat taller in ideal growing conditions. A single stemmed variety with gracefully arching pinnate leaves. This species has become very popular in cultivation for it's size, hardiness, ornamental appearance and it's ability to grow in a range of light levels from full sun to quite deep shade. It is worth a try in a cool temperate garden with an appropriate microclimate, but due to it's versatility if often used as a potted houseplant. Unlike some Phoenix species, it does not like wet feet, but a moist, well draining medium should keep it happy.
