Common name: Gamos Bromeliad.

This medium to large bromeliad from Brazil can be grown terrestrially or as an epiphyte. The leaves are green and up to 600mm/2' in length. Whilst the foliage is not as showey as many bromeliads, it has a number of features that appeal to growers. Firstly, it is very cold tolerant compared with most bromeliads, even surviving light freezes, so it can be grown outside in many more places than most bromeliads. Secondly, the leaf margins are smooth, which makes it a lot more practical in public areas or where children may be near. Thirdly, it has a very colourful inflorescence, which can last for several months. It is easy to care for, being tolerant of drought and neglect and can grow in partial shade to full sun, although it does better out of direct sunlight. Certainly worth a try in cool temperate gardens, but equally happy as a houseplant.
