Common name: True Date Palm/Edible Date Palm.
This is the palm that produces the edible date and can be grown easily from seed from any packet of dates. Similar in size and hardiness to Phoenix canariensis, although it tends to favour drier conditions if exposed to cold. It's natural habitat is Northern Africa and The Middle East, with some regions seeing occasional winter frosts. It differs from Phoenix canariensis in that it forms suckers, although in cultivation these are often removed, purely as a cosmetic preference. This is another sun loving palm and will take full sun at any age, although if it is germinated or grown in shade, gradual exposure to light would be advisable.
