This Dracaena cultivar is unlike most of the genus in appearance. It is actually a cultivar of Dracaena fragrans, one of the two in the Compacta group. Both of the cultivars in the Compacta group, Purpurea and Goldieana, closely resemble some of the Cordyline cultivars available, adding to the confusion of Cordylines often being described or sold as Dracaena. They are actually from totally different plant families and, other than the foliage, have little in common. The Dracaena prefer much drier, brighter conditions and are somewhat drought tolerant, although prefer some shade and moisture when smaller. This cultivar makes an ideal houseplant, as it's compact nature will never require too much space and it will rarely grow much above 1.2m-1.5m/4'-5' indoors. It must have a fairly bright position and will tolerate direct sunlight, when larger. In the garden, it is cool tolerant, but not frost tolerant and can grow up to 3.0m/10' outside, with age. It should be shaded when young, but in a position where it can grow into full or near full sun.
