Common name: Oyster Plant.
Originally from Central America and the Carribean, this is a variegated form of Tradescantia (formerly Rhoeo). This is a small succulent shrub that forms a cluster of 15-30cm/6-12" leaves atop a stem of up to 20cm/8" tall. It's clumping nature and small size lends itself to ground cover or infill in beds and borders. The most striking feature is the vivid voilet colour on the underside of the leaves, common to all forms. Although tropical in origin, they have been known to survive light Freezes and can be grown in anything from deep shade to full sun. They prefer moist soil, but are also fairly drought tolerant. It's adaptability and striking foliage make it an ideal houseplant, but it may also be worth a try outside in cooler climates with some protection on the coldest nights.
