Common name: Guarika Palm.
From the montane rainforests of Southern Brazil, this small palm, height 1-5m (3'-17'), grows at altitudes from 450 - 1500m and sees occasional frost in some areas. Usually single trunking, it grows in deep shade, near streams in acidic soils. It's size and low light requirements make it a good choice as an indoor plant, but it is also worth a try in a protected area of a cool temperate garden. It likes cool nights, so it is probably not suitable for warmer inland climates. Soil must be kept moist at all times.
