Another bromeliad from Brazil, mainly found in subtropical areas in the South and Southeast, where it grows anywhere from see level up to 1000m/3300'. Some of the higher altitude specimens see regular light frosts, so this is a good plant to try in cooler areas. It is a medium sized bromeliad growing to about 600mm/24" tall and differs from the standard form by having partially red leaves, sometimes with lighter spots. Again it is easy to care for, either as a terrestrial plant or an epiphyte. In habitat they are often seen in fairly lifeless surroundings, growing between rocks with minimal supply of water and nutrients. Worth a try outside in cooler areas, but also makes a stunning houseplant, growing in deep shade to almost full sun.
