Ravenea lakatra

Common name: Ironwood Palm.

From the rainforests of Eastern Madagascar, Ravenea lakatra has a slender 150mm (6") trunk to 14m (45') tall. The finely pinnate leaves are 3.6m (12') long, dark green and slightly arching with 600mm (2') stiff leaflets. It has become very rare in habitat, where it's leaf fibres are used for the traditional crafting of products such as hats. This and ongoing deforestation has left only a few wild populations remaining. Being new to cultivation, little is known about it's tolerances, but it is unlikely to be particularly cold hardy.
