Dypsis psammophila

A smallish to 4m (13') height, clustering species from east Madagascar, growing at low elavation near the coast. As with many Dypsis species it is becoming endangered due to habitat destruction. The stems are almost black and it has arching, pinnate leaves, similar in appearance to Dypsis lutescens. Likes a partially shady position and is not likely to be frost tolerant. Being a smaller species it may be possible to grow in a cooler climate, if sufficient protection is possible, alternatively worth a try as a potted specimen inside the house.
